There are few situations in life where we have absolutely everything we want (or need) to move forward.
All the resources…
All the support…
All the opportunities…
All the free time…
All of the focus, motivation and other critical mental resources we rely on to see things through to completion.
Yes, we usually feel like we’re lacking in at least some of these areas. Maybe multiple.
And because we tell ourselves a story about needing all these things, we defer to the easiest course of action rather than acting in spite of our perceived limitations:
We don’t do anything.
It seems easier to give up entirely than to proceed without the things we think we can’t do without.
We prefer to complain and bemoan.
Rather than getting everything we can out of all we’ve got, we get as little as possible from everything we have.
The results are predictable:
We get nowhere.
And even if we do manage to move the needle a little bit, it doesn’t last.
Before long, we’re disheartened & right back to where we started.
But here’s the thing –> it’s not our lack of resources that kills momentum.
It’s an unresourceful outlook.
That’s a paradigm we can shift if we choose to.
Rather than needing everything and doing nothing, we can flip that approach on its head: need nothing, but do everything regardless.
And if we’re dealing with legitimate constraints, where we’re so tied in ideas of perfect performance that we’re unwilling to step into the fray and see what happens, it can helpful to remember this…
Maybe you can’t do everything.
You can’t always do as much as you want to.
But you can always do something.
Even if you feel that something is so small that you’re almost embarassed it’s all you’re able to do, it’s still more than nothing.
Which is exactly what we create when we talk ourselves out of taking action because we refuse to act in spite of our fears.
The fear of looking foolish.
The fear of finding out that we’re not as capable as we think we are.
Or the fear of taking action, realising that it wasn’t so bad, and knowing that we were the only thing holding ourselves back all along.
Success in a moment in time. Succeeding is a process.
And it starts with the commitment to taking action, regardless of the excuses we could make.
