It doesn’t matter who we are, what we’re doing, what advantages we have or what we want to pursue…
Whoever & wherever we are, things could be better.
We could have more.
We could be more.
There could be more supports in place around us.
The deck could be stacked (even more) in our favour.
That’s reality. There will always room for objective improvement in some respect…
But just because things could be better doesn’t mean they need to be.
We might do better if given more time to prepare. But who’s to say?
We might have an easier journey if we had more energy, more money, or knew the right people. But how we do know?
And even if we did know it would be easier, how do we know it would be better?
Simple – we don’t.
We’d prefer things to be different. That’s fine. The problem only arises when we confuse our preferences for pre-requisites: things that we think we need so we can feel a certain way.
The truth is that our feelings about the thing are created internally. Whatever hand we’re dealt means nothing by itself. It’s only when we interpret it and giving it meaning that it weighs on our minds.
Just as it’s decided internally, it can be re-decided, too.
The view we hold today is not the one we need to hold tomorrow.
Our opinion in this moment can be discarded in the next.
(And if it doesn’t serve us, doesn’t support us, and fundamentally limits us in pursuing the things we care about… Maybe it should be.)
We can spend our whole lives in a state of preparation – ironing out problems, correcting our issues, and becoming whatever it is we think we need to be in order to be ready.
Or we can recognise that feeling ready (feeling anything) is an internal process. A decision we come based on our understanding of ourselves & the world around us.
Sometimes, there are barriers. But what looks like a barrier to one person is a mere logistical factor to the next… And an asset to another.
Things could be better.
We can continue to search for opportunities to improve. If it’s possible to do so, within our reach, and ultimately supportive of our goals to do so, then that’s an action worth taking.
But don’t confuse an openness to progress with a requirement for improvement.
Just because things could be better doesn’t mean that they’re not exactly as good as they need to be.
The biggest barriers are in our heads, not on the path before us.
