It’s easy to think that making a difference is something that other people do.

People in positions of power. Not people like us.

It’s simple to understand why.

If you have legions of followers, an army of employees, a mountain of resources, or a lifetime of influence behind you, then you have all the visible materials required to create change.

With a platform to stand on, your voice carries further. Your efforts are more visible when the world shines a spotlight on you. Leverage of all kinds helps to spread your message & multiplies the difference you can make.

But it’s a mistake to conflate breadth with depth. And it’s unwise to place control of our collective trajectory in the hands of a few.

From the moment we first gain self-awareness to the moment we breathe our last, we are humble players in a vast, unpredictable, massively interconnected system… filled with other autonomous actors, all propelled to fulfill their own agendas and those they’ve been handed.

The unprepared are pushed from one point to another by the buffeting winds of change. The world and everything in it tends towards disorder, but forces beyond our control seek to impose structure in accordance with their own ends.

When you’re born in it, raised in it, and saturated in it, you don’t see it as something outside yourself – something that can be molded, shaped, or made into something better. How it is is simply how it is.

But ultimately, it’s the choice of the player how shaped they’ll be the world around them… and what shape they’ll give it in turn.

A single decision can be enough to change the course of the future forever. Not just your own – the future of everyone you come into contact with, too.

Our choices matter. Everything we do casts a vote for the person we become and the world we contribute to. Every interaction we have with a person or system outside ourselves leaves its impression on the other. In ways we can’t understand or even begin to calculate.

Ripples cast by a single stone spread outwards. They never fade, never die – their energy travels throughout the system, echoing eternally in the hearts & minds of all they encounter.

Next time you’re faced with a choice to either shrink away and allow yourself to be subjected to the whims of the world, or to rise and be heard, remember:

You have a voice.

You have a choice.

Your impact (and the difference it could make) is incalculable.
