Systemic declines don’t happen in a flash. Neither do ultimate successes.
They might crystallise in a moment in time. But they’re built by one choice after another layering on top of everything that came before.
When our eyes are fixed on the grand vision, it’s easy to forget that the journey from here to there (or somewhere else entirely) unfolds in a predictable manner:
One step at a time.
We tend to think of our quest as a blank slate…
A process where we’re capable of shaking off the disappointment and frustration of yesterday, returning our attention to the new day at hand, and greeting those challenges with fresh enthusiasm.
Maybe. After all, each moment brings with it the potential for change. But why make things harder than they need to be?
Some choices support our journey. Other ones undermine it. Nothing is inescapable, but all of it has an impact.
Consider your path.
Consider the direction your team is headed in.
Consider the kind of behaviours they engage in and the choices you make on a consistent basis.
Most importantly – consider their current trajectory.
Given all these factors, where do you reasonably expect to be in the future?
Are your actions consistent with those of a group who achieves the kind of things you want to achieve?
Or are you hoping – irrationally – that a flawed course will get you where you want to go?
Successful journeys and failed ones start out from the same place.
A simple question to figure out your direction of travel:
Taken to its logical conclusion, do you expect your choices to leave you better off 6 months from now? Or will you be someplace worse?
We move forward, and time passes. Regardless of what we do with this knowledge.
The choices you make determine whether you move consciously towards somewhere you want to be… or if you drift to another endpoint entirely.
In this moment, faced with the opportunity to make a choice – what path will you pick?
