Music is more than just a collection of notes string together to make a continuous noise.
Sometimes, a melody says as much with its use of silence as it does with its progressions, chords, tones and everything else we can hear.
A break in the rhythm gives us a chance to hear it as it is. To reflect on it. To understand how we got here from where we were.
At its core, silence is merely the absence of sound.
But to the listening ear, it can be so much more.
It’s a blank canvas upon which we project the music of our inner world.
Without something to occupy that space, we instead turn within and give rise to something that fills it.
We shouldn’t be afraid of silence.
We shouldn’t fear a pause in the progression.
We should embrace it for what it is:
A critical aspect of the overall whole. Something that gives texture and meaning to the sound it intersperses, surrounds, and underscores.
A pause in the rhythm might be just what’s needed to move beyond the trappings of a continuous, repetitive beat.
